I and most of my friends use Mirena. I've been using it for over a year and I can't complain. Totally forget I even have it most of the time and the hormones haven't really affected me in any way. The other popular one I know is Skyla. I've seen a lot of those commercial recently but don't know much more.

Avoid the ones with copper. That just doesn't seem safe!

I just got Skyla, been over a month, no complaints. It's my first IUD though and it freaks me out a bit cause there's no way of telling if everything is fine but I used to always forget my pill so I think it's the best option anyway.

Anybody know how IUDs release their hormones? I mean, if they are in you for like years like how does it regulate?

I know paragard doesn't release hormones but the copper thing I find a little strange.

I'm not a scientist but if the FDA approved these IUDs with hormones, I'm guessing it's pretty safe. Pills, patches and most other forms of birth control contain hormones, with the IUDs it just goes into ur body in a different way I guess.

I wore a ParaGard for 30 years altogether. After not being friends with the pill for 10 years, my first insertion was when I was 25, with 10-year reinsertions at 35 and 45, followed by removal at 55 when it was no longer necessary.
The only problems I had with ParaGard was 1) the insertions were PAINFUL, but the pain quickly passed, I charged up on Tylenol before, and I had the insertions done while I was menstruating, and the cervix was already naturall dilated; and 2) after insertions, my husband would hit the strings when we had intercourse (he's quite, BIG,...), this we dealt with until after a month, when I could go back and get the strings trimmed.
At my 45-year old reinsertion, I really wanted to switch to Mirena, since they tend to curtail menstruation. But my OB/GYN knew that I was a smoker, so she recommended strongly against it.
